Center for Applied Research on Work Launching

Building on the many strengths of the ILR School’s faculty and staff, the Center for Applied Research on Work formally launches on Thursday.

“CAROW is a hub that bridges across school units to improve the world of work. It is a place for ILR to build on all that is great about our school,” said Ariel Avgar, Ph.D. ’08, ILR’s David M. Cohen Professor and senior associate dean for Outreach and sponsored research, as well as the center’s director.

“Our school has been serving the public, workers, unions, employers, policymakers and others for 78 years. Through the center’s world-class research, development of new tools and outreach to organizations, practitioners and the public, ILR will share more broadly and more immediately the work of our institutes, programs, faculty and students to inform on-the-ground practices that affect many thousands of people,” he said.

“The K. Lisa Yang and Hock E. Tan CAROW WorkABILITY Incubator is supporting CAROW research through support of ILR’s Criminal Justice and Employment Initiative and our Initiative on Home Health Care Workers with Weill Cornell Medicine and Cornell Tech,” said Avgar, noting that CAROW plans to build additional partnerships across the university.

Alex Colvin, Ph.D., ’99, ILR’s Kenneth F. Kahn ’69 Dean and Martin F. Scheinman ’75, MS ’76, Professor of Conflict Resolution, said, “CAROW deepens ILR’s commitment to developing ideas that will transform policy and practice and to do research that is informed by what is going on in the world of work, seeking to address its biggest challenges. The center is uniquely positioned to bring our expertise to the center of workplace changes unimaginable just a few years ago.”

CAROW research institute members include the Climate Jobs Institute, Global Labor Institute, Institute for Compensation Studies, Labor Dynamics Institute and R. Brinkley Smithers Institute for Alcohol-Related Workplace Studies.
