What Did You Work On: This summer, I worked on a directory to help formerly incarcerated people find housing. I researched rental opportunities for Peaceprints’ clients and interviewed landlords to see if they rented to individuals with criminal records. If they did not, I would facilitate dialogue to educate them about Peaceprints’ reentry services. I also worked closely with transition coordinators to find housing for individuals with specific needs.
Summer Takeaway: I learned how difficult management is and found out that people always have very specific needs on top of restrictions placed on them by outside forces. Although it is difficult, it is incredibly fulfilling to work hard to help a specific person out. I also learned a lot more about real estate and the housing market; something that will suit me well in the near future. Lastly, I learned how to use ArcGIS, a useful tool to display cartographic data.
Career Goals: After the High Road, I plan to focus on public interest work as I continue my college career. I have specific interests in education, labor, housing, and economic inequality and hope to do some work in Washington D.C. that aligns with these interests. After undergrad, I will pursue a Master's in Public Policy and work in public service afterward. I will dedicate time and energy to representing those in my community and advocating on their behalf.
Shout Out: Shout out to Adam for teaching me how to play golf. When Kricky sent out the google form earlier this summer asking us what we wanted to learn this summer, I wrote golf. It was nice to have that desire actualized.
