CAHRS Virtual Working Group: New Developments in Structured Interviewing

Structured interviews are among the few selection processes that have proven to improve hiring outcomes. Yet recent examples of how organizations actually conduct and evaluate these interviews are few and far between.

Overview

In this working group, participants will share and discuss how they facilitate structured interviews in their companies. We encourage each participant to bring examples of interview guides and grading rubrics to share and discuss.

  • What role does HR play in facilitating structured interviews?
  • Who creates the interview questions in your organization?
  • What makes for a “good” interview question?
  • Do you use a technology platform to create interview guides? If so, what do you like (or dislike) about it?
  • How do you coach hiring managers to approach the “small talk” portion of the interview, which often occurs at the beginning?
  • Do you encourage hiring managers to use a scoring rubric? If so, what does a typical rubric look like?
  • How much, if any, pushback do you get from hiring managers regarding following an interview guide and filling out a rubric?
  • How do you determine what weight to place on the interview vis-à-vis other selection instruments?
  • What best practices would you like to share with the group?
  • What frustration are you encountering that you’d like to find some solutions to?

This session is designed for individuals in a talent acquisition/selection role and anyone who otherwise designs or supports the interview process in your organization.

Given that we limit the number of registrations to our working groups to allow for rich discussion and best practice sharing, we ask that you only register for a session if you will be able to attend for the duration. Prior to the session, attendees should give some thought to topic that will be discussed and come prepared to engage actively in the discussion. We also strongly prefer that participants be on camera during the session to allow for more engaging interaction. If for some reason after you sign up for the working group, something comes up, it would be great to get even a last-minute e-mail advising us that you cannot attend as we sometimes have a waiting list.
