GLI Announces new visiting fellow MEP Samira Rafaela

Member of the European Parliament Samira Rafaela joins the Global Labor Institute for 2024 – 2025 as a visiting fellow of the Cornell University ILR School. Samira will join us from June 2024 when she leaves the European Parliament. She plans to reflect on, research and discuss changes in global labor governance—Samira was the rapporteur for the E.U.’s new forced labor ban—and policymaking in an era of greater corporate accountability. See her plenary speech here and recent coverage here.

In the European Parliament since 2019, Samira has been a Member of the Committee on International Trade where she was the Coordinator for Renew Europe. As trade member, she has made trade policies more gender-sensitive, fair, and progressive.

In addition to her leading role on forced labor, she was rapporteur on the groundbreaking Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive for the committee on Employment and Social affairs. As standing rapporteur for the trade agreement with Chile, she succeeded in enforcing the first dedicated Gender and Trade chapter on behalf of the European Parliament. In 2020, Samira was selected as Politico Europe’s one of the 20 MEPs to watch 2020 for her contribution to making trade more green and fair

Samira’s next event with us will be for the launch our Cornell GLI Labor Outcomes Metrics in a live virtual event on Wednesday, May 29, at 10 a.m. EST (4 p.m. CET). New European rules for global supply chains require new ways to measure outcomes for workers, employers, and lead firms. Join our webinar for a presentation of this new set of 25 quantitative measures to allow regulators, firms, unions, and the rest of us to score, track, and compare impacts over time. Registration is required.
