Visiting Fellow Samira Rafaela in the International Labor Rights Case Law Journal
Cornell GLI Visiting Fellow and former Member of European Parliament Samira Rafaela is in the International Labor Rights Case Law Journal, writing about Turkmenistan and the European Union’s Forced Labour Regulations, for which she was the lead parliamentary negotiator. She describes the ways this new law can be used to work to eradicate forced labor in Turkmenistan, as well as how it plays into their Roadmap for Cooperation with the ILO and other economic realities in the country. Read her piece of commentary here.
"In Turkmenistan, two complicating factors are in play: child labor and state-imposed forced labor. Under the EU’s new forced labor ban regulation, extra attention will be given to products with a high risk of state-imposed forced labor...The need is pressing for Turkmenistan to effectively implement the Roadmap for Cooperation with the ILO, not only to protect its citizens’ rights but also to prove itself a credible partner country. In light of recent developments in corporate accountability and forced labor, more legislation is expected worldwide. A new global labor order is emerging, driven by new corporate accountability legislation."
