Abowd on Cornell Population Center Panel on Changes to Census Data
Friday, September 20th from 12-1:30pm, Mann Library Room 102:
Director of the Labor Dynamics Institute, Professor John M. Abowd will take part in a panel hosted by the Cornell Population Center:
You may have heard that the Census Bureau is implementing major changes to how their data products will be used and accessed, based on growing concerns about data privacy. Starting with the 2020 Census (and the ACS, shortly thereafter), many of the data we are accustom to using in our research will be treated with “differential privacy” rules that will inject noise into summary tables, particularly at smaller geographic scales (places, tracts, etc.). These changes will affect how you use Census data in your research, and the general issues around data privacy will have broad implications for public-use data resources.
Discussing these issues, tradeoffs, and impacts will be LDI's Professor Abowd, Chief Scientist at the U.S. Census Bureau and Edmund Ezra Day Professor of Economics at Cornell, and:
- Andrew Beveridge, Professor & Chair of Sociology at Queens College and Graduate School of CUNY, and CEO of Social Explorer.
- Shannon Monnat, Lerner Chair for Public Health Promotion & Associate Professor at Syracuse.
- Abraham Flaxman, Associate Professor of Global Health at the Institute for Health Metrics & Evaluation at Univ of Washington.
Anyone with interest in our public data infrastructure, and especially users of Census data, are encouraged to attend.
