Brown and Wheaton to Speak at Environmental Summit

The Worker Institute at Cornell is co-sponsoring Daemen College's annual Environmental Summit. Celebrating its ninth year, the event brings environmentally-focused organizations together to network and learn best practices from various Western New York experts.

This year's summit, "Food for Thought: Safe and Green for the Future," will be held on September 28th. The event is free and open to the public.

Nellie J. Brown, CIH, Director of Workplace Health and Safety Programs at the Worker Institute, will give a presentation on how chemicals found in the products that we consume are interfering with the bodies' processes.

"These emerging chemicals are increasingly found in cleaning, personal care, plastic food and water containers, pharmaceuticals and many other products that we consume.These chemicals get into our wastewater systems and eventually contaminate our soil, food and drinking water," explains Brown. This workshop "Endocrine Disrupters Explained" will explore the use of these chemicals, routes of exposure, and protection and prevention from these chemicals.

Art Wheaton, Director of Western NY Labor and Environmental Programs, will also participate, representing the Worker Institute and the Western New York Apollo Alliance. Wheaton serves on the planning committee and will moderate the main panel "How Local Manufacturers are Addressing Sustainability" featuring speakers from local businesses McCullagh Coffee, Perry's Ice Cream and Rich Products.

In addition to the panel and workshop presentations, the Environmental Summit will also include an environmental exposition, electronic recycling drop off, and tours of Daemen College's Ecotrail and LEED-certified buildings.
