Labor Leadership Development

A joint project of the Workforce Development Institute and the Worker Institute

The Workforce Development Institute and The Worker Institute at Cornell have launched a pilot program to develop emerging leaders of labor unions and non-traditional worker center labor organizations in New York State.

The training program is designed to introduce and build the leadership skills necessary to address the changing world of work and the challenges of the new economy. 

The first session, Building Labor Leadership, was held in New York City at The Worker Institute on October 26th.

"The Workforce Development Institute and Worker Institute at Cornell were very successful in bringing labor representatives of different sectors, public, private, building and construction, and immigrant workers to collective discuss important concerns impacting today's workforce and the building of labor leadership," said Sonia Ivany, regional director of the Workforce Development Institute.

To complete the program, participants will engage in a series of four training sessions. The four sessions include: Building Labor Leadership; Today's Labor Movement: Opportunities and Challenges; The New Economy: the Impact of the Workforce and Labor Organizations; and Civic Engagement, Governance, and Building Community Alliances. 

Plans are presently underway to continue similar programs in the Hudson Valley, Albany and other areas across the state.
