Over the first year of our initiative, we have contributed to 20+ ongoing research studies, published nine manuscripts, engaged in community outreach, attended local and national events, presented at conferences and served as mentors in our respective fields. We look forward to further expanding our impact as our initiative continues to grow!

Sponsored by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Dr. Sterling was one of five physician scientists selected to speak on her research program in a session called, “From Legacy to Future: Physician Scientists and the Next Frontier of Innovation in Medicine.” She spoke about her research program in home health, including her collaborations with multi-disciplinary teams and scientists, as well as the Initiative on Home Care Work.

Home Health Aide Peer Coaches participated in the “Improving the Mental Health of Home Health Aides (MINDSET)” study, the first clinical trial of its kind, conducted in collaboration with the 1199SEIU Training and Employment Fund. Peer coaches deliver health knowledge, strategies and skills to improve aides' mental health and well-being on and off the job. This work is supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Initiative on Home Care Work.

Ian Solano-Kamaiko, a PhD student (pictured on the left at Cornell Tech), demonstrated how Meta Smart Glasses can assist Home Health Aides (HHAs) while they care for their patients at home. A simple command like “Hey Meta, take a photo,” can offer HHAs a variety of practical applications including taking hands-free pictures of patient wounds or progression of symptoms (i.e. leg swelling), allowing them to escalate their findings to the clinical team.

Cisco Espinosa, MD-PhD candidate and former Assistant Research Coordinator at Weill Cornell Medicine, taught home health aides about heart failure. This training was done in collaboration with VNS Health, a large home care agency in NYC, and as part of an ongoing clinical trial to improve outcomes for HHAs and their patients.
