Background and Previous Experience

Dr. Peter Yane-hao Chen is a full professor of foreign languages and applied linguistics as well as international negotiations and interpretations at National Taipei University (NTPU) in New Taipei City, Taiwan. Prior to receiving the 2014-2015 U.S. Senior Fulbright Research Grant and being accepted as a Visiting Fellow at the ILR School at Cornell University, Dr. Chen served as the Chairperson of the Department of Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics (FLAL) and as the Director for the Center of International Negotiations and Interpretations (CINI) at NTPU.

Since completing his doctoral degree in Communication Studies and Rhetoric from The University of Texas at Austin in September 1992, Dr. Chen has devoted his academic career mainly to FLAL and CINI of NTPU as well as governmental agencies and professional societies in Taiwan in terms of teaching, research, and service. Dr. Chen has offered courses in International Negotiation, Conflict Management, Cross-Strait Negotiation between Taiwan and China, and English/Chinese Translation (written) and Interpretation (oral) Practicum at NTPU, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Labor Affairs in Taiwan. Dr. Chen has also written and published books and articles on Binary Negotiation Strategy, Negotiation Interpreting, English/Chinese Rhetoric, Teaching English/Chinese as a Foreign/Second Language, and English/Chinese Translation and Interpreting Strategy and Tactic.

In addition to his academic engagements in Taiwan, Dr. Chen has taught at The University of California Davis and Middlebury College and served as a guest lecturer at Williams College. He has been a guest lecturer at Beijing Foreign Studies University and China Foreign Affairs University in China, and the University of Essex and the London School of Economics in the United Kingdom.

While at ILR, Dr. Chen will be engaged in a research project entitled, “A Study of the Pentad-Gestalt Rhetoric as an Intercultural Strategy for Conflict Resolution,” which is interdisciplinary and comparative in nature and will cover lexicology, phonology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics within a Gestalt Psychology approach. It is expected that this project upon its completion will construct a holistic framework module of rhetoric to resolve the intercultural conflicts among different races, ethnic groups, and nations on earth.
