Margot Treadwell interns at United States District Court of the Southern District of NY
I worked in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York in the chambers of Richard M. Berman conducting research to aid his supervised release program, which aims to increase court involvement throughout an individual’s time in the justice system to provide support and overcome obstacles. Judge Berman's work is providing a new model for judicial involvement and helps make supervision more efficient by tailoring it to the individual and often considering early termination for individuals who have proven they are prepared.
I conducted research on other models of court supervision, which including drafting a 5-page legal memo for the judge. I also updated the court's habeas tracker and created fact sheets for individuals currently under supervision to enable the law clerks and social workers to quickly understand an individual’s history.
I picked up immense transferable skills, while working with a ILR alumnus within the legal system to pioneer pathways to justice through systemic methods
ILR provided perspective on the justice system and US law needed to understand the chambers' goals and the research skills to enable me to succeed.
My credit internship gave me my first taste of a legal career, shaping my approach to justice and rehabilitation.
Thank you to Judge Berman!
