McCarthy Earns LERA Outstanding Scholar Award

John McCarthy, an assistant professor of labor relations, law and history, is this year’s recipient of the John T. Dunlop Outstanding Scholar Award. The honor, given by the Labor and Employment Relations Association, will be presented at the organization’s annual meeting this summer in Portland, Oregon. 

The award recognizes contributions to research that address industrial relations and employment problems of national significance.

According to the selection committee, McCarthy was chosen for his research on how labor-management partnerships can promote productive, innovation-enhancing connections through site-level union leaders.
 
McCarthy’s work, the committee said, evaluates “core theoretical assumptions regarding the nature of social capital in the context of the modern economy, including the prevailing assumption that relationship stability is essential for supporting worker mobilization and employee well-being.” 
 
Previous ILR winners of the Dunlop Award include Adam Seth Litwin (2014), Chris Riddell (2013), Rebecca K. Givan (2011), Rosemary Batt (2000) and Kate Bronfenbrenner (1998).
