Social Justice for Workers

Arbitrator and mediator Martin Scheinman '75, MS '76, receives the Peggy Browning Award Tuesday for "passion and dedication to the rights and needs of workers and their families."

The event begins at 5:45 p.m. at the United Federation of Teachers headquarters in New York City.

Scheinman has arbitrated more than 10,000 public and private sector disputes in education, health care, manufacturing, communications and many other fields.

ILR's Scheinman Institute on Conflict Resolution serves undergraduate and graduate students, as well as working professionals. It was endowed by Laurie and Martin Scheinman.

The institute's budget, programs and staff numbers have increased fivefold since the 2007 Scheinman gift, according to David Lipsky, institute director and ILR's Anne Evans Estabrook Professor of Dispute Resolution.

At Tuesday's event, Lipsky will offer remarks(pdf) about his former student.  

Tuesday's award is sponsored by the Peggy Browning Fund, named for the late Margaret A. Browning, a member of the National Labor Relations Board.

Through fellowships, an annual conference and other opportunities, the non-profit organization seeks to increase law students' understanding of work issues and to promote their practice of public interest labor law.

Scheinman, winner of ILR's 2006 Groat Award, lives in Sand Point, Long Island.

He receives the Browning Award Tuesday, along with Denis Hughes, past president of the New York State AFL-CIO, and Vincent Pitta, managing partner at Pitta & Giblin LLP, based in New York City.
