Andrea Kim ’16 is one of 12 students statewide participating in a conference focused on higher education.

As SUNYCON 2015 began yesterday in New York City, State University of New York Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher said, “As we spend the next two days reimagining a higher education sector that is not just sustainable, but thriving, it is critical that we provide a vehicle for our discussions, discoveries and ideas to keep moving forward.”

“These SUNY students and faculty were chosen for their interest in innovation in higher education, and we have every confidence that their SUNYCON experience will be an enriching one for them, personally, and for their campuses, as they return home with new tools, clearer vision and a broader network of connections in their fields.”

Issues being discussed at the conference include:

• What do colleges and universities need to do to ensure future strength and relevance?
• How do the academy, government, business and the philanthropic sectors work together effectively to create resilient and sustainable communities?
• How does higher education adapt to the changing demands of society without compromising the core academic mission?

Kim said, “This conference will allow me to exchange ideas and take what I learn from the event and implement it on campus and, ultimately, in the future.”

“Currently, I am taking ‘Crisis in Public Education,’ and have found it extremely useful to surround myself with other students who are interested in strengthening the K-12 and higher education system,” she said.

Nominated as a conference fellow by Kevin Hallock, ILR’s Kenneth F. Kahn ’69 Dean and Joseph R. Rich ’80 Professor of Economics and Human Resource Studies, Kim plans to pursue a career helping resolve education issues.
