Malcomb Wins Social Justice Award

ILR Ph.D. student Claire Malcomb won a Social Justice Award from the Graduate School Office of Inclusion and Student Engagement and the Graduate and Professional Student Diversity Council.

The 2023 inclusion excellence awards were presented to 32 recipients at the Graduate Diversity and Inclusion Awards and Recognition Celebration on May 16 on campus.

Malcomb’s research focuses on allyship behavior and how organizations can create more inclusive workplaces. She also studies stigma and discrimination with an interest in the backlash people face for acting in counterstereotypical ways.

Her current projects include “Creating Organizational Inclusion Through Cultures of Allyship,” which examines how organizations can engage employees in ally behavior policies to create inclusive cultures effectively. 

She is an ILR Workplace Inclusion and Diversity Education graduate student fellow. WIDE, as the center is known, combines research, teaching and organizational practices to create opportunities for scholars to work alongside teaching specialists, students and organizations.

The Social Justice Award is made annually to “student(s), group(s) or organization(s) who have shown a commitment to identifying and addressing inequities, creating avenues of access, advancing diversity and inclusion, and/or promoting human rights within and/or beyond Cornell,” according to the Graduate School. 

Also winning a 2023 Social Justice Award are Dyese Matthews, fiber science and apparel design doctoral candidate; Héctor Loyola Irizarry, biomedical and biological sciences doctoral candidate; and Jawuanna McAllister, biochemistry, molecular and cell biology doctoral candidate.
