Worker Rights, Labor Law, and Dispute Resolution with the Global Supply Chain in Asia

The Scheinman Institute is pleased to host the second student-driven labor dialogue for China and Southeast Asia. Conference participation is available to ILR, law, and other Cornell students.
We are seeking students who will research and present basic findings on the following countries: Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, and China. Themes will include:
- Labor implications of the Trans Pacific Partnership in Vietnam (TPP)
- Comparative labor law, collective bargaining, and ILO standards
- Comparative legal strikes and wildcat strikes
- Comparative workplace dispute resolution (mediation and arbitration)
- Codes of Social Responsibility in Asia: Public Relations or Effective Solutions?
- Mapping Garments “Made in China:” Tracing the Economics of Global Trade
Each presenter or team will be assigned to a country or topic, present their research findings with Power Point, and receive feedback from faculty. Your commitment will end in one month, by October 7, unless you wish to pursue more research. This is a non-credit opportunity.
There will be a free dinner for all participating students, hosted by faculty.

Up to two students may apply for a single country or topic. You may apply as a team. Preference will be given to students who have taken courses or demonstrated interest in global labor law, the ILO, CSR, international trade, worker rights, or dispute resolution. This is a one month time commitment, which will end after the conference.

Optional writing competition, post-conference
With sufficient interest, the Scheinman Institute will offer a student writing competition on labor issues in Asia. Student research may be placed onto the Scheinman ALAP (Asia Labor Arbitration Project) website.
