Why did you choose the MILR program?
I chose the MILR program because of my passion for wanting to understand people and how they think, which was the basis for my undergraduate degree (Criminology & Social Science), which has helped me analyze behavior and develop countermeasures. My previous work experience was in Finance (transactional accounting), where I had the opportunity to work with HR professionals and see how instrumental HR was to the business - to further understand how HR impacts/drive the business, the best option was to come to a program where I can get firsthand and practical knowledge.
What is your favorite part about the MILR program?
For me, it has been the people I have met and the friends I have made - the biggest issue was that I had packed up everything and moved across the pond from the UK and I was worried about meeting new people and making new friendships (we really become family helping each other).
What has been your favorite class so far?
I really cannot choose just one:
- Fundamentals of Benefits - David Kasiarz - makes an amazing effort getting to know everyone, which is evident in his feedback and brings a lot of real-world insights to the class
- Leadership Theory & Practice - I learned so much about the kind of leader I am vs the kind I want to be and the professor is just beyond amazing and makes the class very interactive (really helpful for my internship because I was able to see what leadership looked like and identify the kind of leaders I wanted to model myself after)
- Organizational Consulting - I really loved this class because as we were learning, we were putting it into practice on a real client, which was also really helpful for my internship (i was able to put on my internal consultant cap)
All my classes have been very interactive, you get to learn from amazing professors, classmates, and guest lecturers.
What is your favorite part of Ithaca?
There are amazing views everywhere you turn - I have lived in a countryside type village back in the UK, so to have familiar views has been instrumental in helping me settle in.
What advice would you give a prospective student?
Be ready to come out of your shell and be authentic because there are amazing opportunities for you to interact and network with different people from all over the world as well as executives from a multitude of organizations.
What was your summer internship company/location?
Dell Technologies in Austin, Texas
What was the highlight of your summer intnernship?
The highlight of my summer internship was the way I was integrated into my team - from day one I did not feel like an intern. Having had previous work experience this was great because it felt like day one of a new job - the transition was easy/smooth and I was able to put everything I had I had learned from the program so far into practice.
Where will you be working full-time after you graduate?
Dell Technologies in Austin, Texas
