John Murphy
John J. Murphy was initiated into the membership of the former Plumbers Local Union No. 2, the home Local of George Meany, in January of 1984. He is a fourth generation Union plumber in the city of New York. After completing his Apprenticeship, John worked in various capacities of the plumbing industry in both the private and public sectors.
In 1996 at the age of 32, John was elected as Recording Secretary of the largest Plumbers Union in the United States and Canada. He has since been elected as a Business Agent and Financial Secretary-Treasurer before being elected as Business Manager, a position that he held until his election as the UA International Representative of NYS in 2016.
John is a Vice-President of the NYS AFL-CIO, the New York City Central Labor Council and the NYS Building and Construction Trades Council and serves on the boards of the NYS Helmets to Hardhats program, Climate Jobs NY, the Workers Institute Advisory Council at Cornell ILR and the Cornell Climate Jobs Institute Advisory Board. He has served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Plumbers Local Union No. 1 Benefit Funds and Chairman of the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee. John has also served as a Board Member of both the Edward J. Malloy Construction Skills Initiative and Nontraditional Employment for Women.
In August of 2016 and 2021 John was unanimously elected to serve as an International Representative of the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters representing more than 24,000 members in the state of New York.
